Democrats are lining up to run for President in 2020.
It’s a free for all to see who can stake out the most radical left positions possible to win over Democrat primary voters.
But one top Democrat admitted the one thing that sealed the party’s doom in 2020.
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is considered one of the leading contenders for the 2020 nomination.
Gillibrand began her career representing an upstate New York Congressional district.
When Gillibrand had to face a more conservative electorate, she claimed she opposed amnesty for illegal immigrants and held an A+ rating from the establishment gun group the National Rifle Association.
But now that Gillibrand wants to run for President in the age of the resistance, she is cutting loose and staking out the most extreme positions possible.
Gillibrand appeared at Ozy Fest – a gathering of lunatic fringe liberals in New York City – and declared the first thing Democrats should do if they take back Congress is abolish ICE:
“So when we flip the House and flip the Senate, I think the first thing we should is deal with the children who are being separated from their families at the border. We should, I think get rid of ICE. We should separate out the two missions. And do the anti-terrorism mission, the national security mission. And then on the other side, make sure you’re doing… looking at immigration as a humanitarian issue. These are civil issues, these are families.”
Gillibrand’s declaration that she supports open borders and abolishing ICE may play well in Democrat Presidential primary contests.
But Donald Trump won the 2016 election because he flipped 200 counties that voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and in 2012.
A good portion of the Obama to Trump counties were in the industrial Midwest – Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – which powered Trump to win these key states, putting him over the top in the Electoral College.
The driving force behind Trump’s victory in those states was his strong stance on building the border wall and deporting illegal immigrants.
Democrats will be writing off the voters they lost forever if they allow their base to drag them into staking out politically toxic policy positions.
Only 21 percent of respondents to a Huffington Post/YouGov poll claimed they support abolishing ICE.
That is less than half the number of Americans who oppose abolishing ICE.
If the Democrats want to make immigration the ground the 2020 election is fought on, Donald Trump will be all too happy to oblige them.
Immigration was the signature issue that turned Trump into a supernova in the GOP primary.
Trump defeated 16 other Republicans – considered the deepest field in a generation – and then the heavily favored Hillary Clinton in the General Election because voters wanted a President who would secure the border and halt the invasion of illegal aliens into America.
Do you think the Democrats demands to abolish ICE will guarantee Donald Trump’s re-election?
