It’s no surprise that Democrats want to take down Trump in 2020.
But some would be surprised to hear that there are numerous Republicans planning on it as well.
And someone you won’t believe is taking it a step further and just threatened to challenge Trump in 2020.
The NeverTrump movement has lost almost all of its steam.
While they used to have many prominent Republicans sticking to their pledge to never support Donald Trump, they have lost most of their support.
That’s for two reasons.
First, it is hard to justify opposing Trump when the economy is improving at unheard of rates, and while Trump is negotiating peace around the world.
Second, most of the people who were in the NeverTrump movement don’t have many principles, to begin with.
When nearly 80 percent of Republicans approve of Trump, it is hard to be a prominent Republican and not back the president.
But while most have left the anti-Trump movement, there are some stubborn stragglers.
Bill Kristol is a conservative commentator and has perhaps been the most consistent anti-Trump voice in the Republican Party.
On virtually everything Trump does, Kristol is waiting to give his take, and low-and-behold, he believes that Trump is wrong almost all the time.
He doesn’t seem to care that the economy is improving, or that Trump is taking solid moves towards securing our borders, or even that Trump is having very fruitful peace talks with North Korea; he just hates Trump.
That’s why Kristol has been hinting at challenging President Trump in the Republican primary in 2020.
A source familiar with Kristol says he has been considering it for months, according to the Daily Caller.
The Daily Caller also spoke with Kristol, who refused to rule out a run, stating:
“No plans to run. But I’m randomly in Boston today and happen to have had lunch with someone who does a lot of work in New Hampshire. As he’d say, ‘Ya nevah know.’”
That point about the person he was having lunch with doing work in New Hampshire is significant.
The New Hampshire Primary election is the second electoral contest during the primary season.
Without a win in New Hampshire, a presidential candidate is going to have a very hard time down the road in other states.
It would not be surprising to see Kristol challenge Trump.
He has long been speaking out against Trump, stating that the Republican Party needs to be “liberated” from “Trumpism.”
But while Kristol appears to be talking tough, it is unclear if his run will happen.
He has already threatened Trump with a challenger, during the 2016 general election.
Kristol was pushing his fellow NeverTrump friend, and political commentator David French to run against Trump.
While there was a lot of speculation about French running, it never became reality.
He likely felt that his run wasn’t needed to stop Trump, as the popular consensus before the 2016 election was that Hillary Clinton would win.
But now that Trump is already in office, Kristol might give a last-ditch effort to stop Trump.
How badly do you think Bill Kristol would lose against Trump?
