Nancy Pelosi has been in Congress for decades.
Her record of scandals goes back for years and covers multiple presidential terms.
But this letter she just sent to President Trump is the worst scandal of her career.
Nancy Pelosi raised eyebrows when she asked President Trump the unthinkable this week.
Every year, the President addresses Congress with the annual State of the Union speech.
But Pelosi wants to delay or outright cancel this year’s address, just to spite President Trump.
The Democratic Speaker of the House sent a letter to the President this week requesting that he delay the speech or cancel it altogether and simply submit a letter to Congress outlining his State of the Union address.
The last time a President did not give a State of the Union address and instead submit a letter to Congress was Jimmy Carter in 1981, after his crushing defeat at the hands of Ronald Reagan.
Prior to 1913, presidents routinely submitted a yearly letter to Congress rather than address them in the form of a speech to a joint session.
But the practice of addressing Congress in person is a critical aspect of the modern presidency and has been for over 100 years.
Politico reports, “Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday asked President Donald Trump to reschedule his State of the Union address — or deliver it in writing — as long as the government remains shut down.”
Pelosi wants to use the federal shutdown as the excuse for not hosting a State of the Union Speech, but the truth is she wants to spite Trump and make him feel the pain for daring to cross her on the hotly disputed border wall.
Trump has yet to respond to Pelosi’s threats.
He may still go ahead with pushing for the State of the Union to be held in person, as is custom.
However, Democrats may boycott the address, and the country has never seen what happens when a sitting Speaker refuses to invite the President to address Congress in the House Chamber.
The Constitution also requires the President to submit a yearly report to Congress on the state of the union, though it does not specify in what format he must give it.
President Trump will likely have to choose between setting up another showdown with Pelosi on hosting it in person as is custom, sending in a letter, or possibly even giving the speech from the Oval Office.
Regardless of what option he chooses, the scuffle over the State of the Union shows how petty Nancy Pelosi has become.
Her hatred of the President and his policies has extended so far that she is willing to spite him over executing one of his basic constitutional duties in order to get her way.
She is willing to delay something which has been conducted almost non-stop for over 100 years simply because Trump won’t cave to her demands to open the government without any funding for border security.
We will keep you up to date with any new developments in this ongoing story.
