Democrats are weaponizing the federal government to go after conservatives.
Even when they follow the law they’re not safe from investigation.
You won’t believe how the FBI used a Biden diary to target a top Trump ally.
Last Thursday two Florida residents pleaded guilty in federal court on charges of stealing the diary and other possessions of President Biden’s daughter, Ashley, and selling them to the conservative group Project Veritas before the 2020 presidential election.
They will be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain.
“Harris and Kurlander stole personal property from an immediate family member of a candidate for national political office,” Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement. “They sold the property to an organization in New York for $40,000 and even returned to take more of the victim’s property.”
The diary belonging to President Joe Biden’s youngest child contained highly personal data such as tax records and a digital storage card containing private family photographs.
Ashley Biden reportedly left her diary at the home of a friend before it was sold to Project Veritas. Project Veritas did not publish any of the contents of the diary, but instead reportedly had delivered it to law enforcement in 2020.
Project Veritas called its news gathering “ethical and legal.”
“A journalist’s lawful receipt of material later alleged to be stolen is routine, commonplace, and protected by the First Amendment,” the organization said in a statement.
But The New York Times reported Thursday that Kurlander has promised to help the FBI investigate Project Veritas as part of his plea deal.
“Prosecutors said Mr. Kurlander agreed as part of a plea deal to cooperate with the Justice Department’s investigation into how the diary was acquired by Project Veritas, whose deceptive operations against liberal groups and traditional news organizations made it a favorite of former President Donald J. Trump.”
It has long been legally established that, because of the First Amendment, journalists and news organizations can’t be prosecuted for publishing illegally obtained materials, if they were not involved in illegally obtaining them.
The FBI is possibly investigating whether Project Veritas played any role in the theft of the diary.
Last November the FBI carried out a predawn raid on the home of Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe in connection to the Biden diary.
In May Project Veritas reported that a source within the FBI revealed that the Bureau was targeting the “news media,” including Project Veritas.
The alleged FBI whistleblower told O’Keefe that “Project Veritas appears to be a victim of political undertakings” in connection with the raid on his home the previous year.
