The Democrat Party is facing a choice that could decide the 2020 election.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and others want Democrats to support dismantling the police.
You won’t believe what Joe Biden’s top choice for VP said about defunding the police.
At one point in time, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was a frontrunner for Joe Biden to select her as his vice presidential running mate.
But Whitmer’s prospects dimmed after she suffered numerous missteps related to her tyrannical lockdown orders which were the strictest in the nation.
While Whitmer remained a viable – but wobbly – vice presidential contender, those hopes extinguished completely when Whitmer expressed support for defunding the police.
In an interview with the far-left black publication The Root, Whitmer expressed support for defunding the police.
“The spirit as you just articulated is really just about reprioritizing and rebuilding communities, not just policing,” Whitmer told The Root.
Whitmer then claimed that state governments could redirect funds away from the police toward welfare state and big government programs that Whitmer claimed would “level the playing field.”
“If you do all those other things, you don’t need all the money going to the police departments,” Whitmer added. “So yeah, the spirit of it, I do support that spirit.”
Whitmer’s spokeswoman immediately cleaned up the mess her boss made.
“The governor believes we need greater investment in people and communities, which means leveling the playing field through better schools, transportation, and access to health care,” Whitmer spokeswoman Tiffany Brown clarified. “That’s why the governor has proposed real reforms in policing, and will continue to advance a policy agenda that promotes racial equity here in our state.”
Whitmer backtracked as quickly as possible for good reason.
Donald Trump is determined to tag the Democrat ticket with the “defund the police” label.
The base of the Democrat Party is embracing the “defund the police” rallying cry, but few other Americans are.
A recent poll found just 16 percent of Americans supported defunding the police and with 65 percent opposing.
Joe Biden even made a rare public interview with CBS where he stated his opposition to defunding the police.
“No, I don’t support defunding the police. I support conditioning federal aid to police based on whether or not they meet certain basic standards of decency and honorableness,” Biden told fake news CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell.
Joe Biden is leading President Trump in the polls.
And while Biden’s lead is outside the margin of error, it is not insurmountable and there are still five months left before the November election.
The last thing Joe Biden and the Democrats need is losing news cycle after news cycle, fending off attacks of being anti-police radicals because the running mate once expressed support for defunding the police.
And that is the predicament Democrats would find themselves in if Whitmer is on the ticket.
