From the moment Donald Trump won the 2016 election, entrenched forces inside the government schemed to take him down.
Until now, no one knew just how deep the rot ran.
And you won’t believe which general tried to overthrow Donald Trump.
When Donald Trump nominated James “Mad Dog” Mattis to serve as Secretary of Defense, everyone thought the President hit a home run.
Mattis served as a legendary Marine Corps General who also clashed with Barack Obama over Obama’s weak response to Iran.
But Trump soon had major regrets.
The President quipped that Mattis’ nickname should have been “moderate” because Mattis opposed the President at every turn.
Mattis fought the President over Trump’s decision to pull out of Obama’s disastrous Iran Nuclear Deal and Paris Global Warming Accords.
In the early days of the administration, Secretary of Defense Mattis dragged his feet on implementing the President’s reversal of Barack Obama’s order that allowed so-called “transgenders” to serve in the military.
But the final straw for Mattis was President Trump following through on his promise to wind down endless wars and begin withdrawing 1,500 of the 2,000 American troops in Syria.
Mattis resigned and eventually spoke out harshly against Trump after Trump deployed the National Guard in Washington, D.C. to put an end to the Black Lives Matter riots.
Those were standard Washington policy disagreements and attempts by a subordinate to push back against a President whose agenda he disagrees with.
It was ugly, but Mattis’ conduct followed the usual pattern of an official resigning rather than implement policies he believes to be wrong.
But in Bob Woodward’s new anti-Trump hit piece book, “Rage,” Woodward described Mattis drifting far beyond the bounds of normal behavior into what some critics believe to be sedition.
Woodward described how Mattis believed Trump to be so unfit for office that he told then-Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats they may have to stage a coup and remove Trump.
The book describes how Mattis went so far as to go to the National Cathedral in Washington to pray over his plan to “take collective action” against President Trump.
Woodward wrote:
Mattis quietly went to Washington National Cathedral to pray about his concern for the nation’s fate under Trump’s command and, according to Woodward, told Coats, “There may come a time when we have to take collective action” since Trump is “dangerous. He’s unfit.”
In a separate conversation recounted by Woodward, Mattis told Coats, “The president has no moral compass,” to which the director of national intelligence replied: “True. To him, a lie is not a lie. It’s just what he thinks. He doesn’t know the difference between the truth and a lie.”
A former military general plotting in secret with other cabinet officials to overthrow a sitting President is stuff out of the third world.
For all the fake news – and Mattis’ – talk that Trump trashed norms and represented a so-called “threat” to democracy, it was really Trump’s opponents that operated outside the rule of law and as rogues threatening to undo America’s constitutional republic.
