Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are counting down the days until the midterms.
They think a blue wave is building.
But they could not believe what this poll said about their chances in November.
Chuck Schumer Smiles At The Latest Poll
Democrats hold an edge on which party’s voters are more fired up to vote.
That’s why they lead in the generic ballot question of which party voters want to see run Congress.
This is not surprising.
Since the Civil War, the President’s party usually suffers midterm losses.
Democrats should gain seats.
But it’s the reason why they are set to win that has Republicans concerned.
An internal Republican National Committee poll shows half of GOP voters don’t believe Democrats can win in November.
They do not believe Republican candidates need their support.
Therefore, they are not as likely to say they are going to vote.
The RNC put together a study based on the poll.
Their goal was to warn Republican voters that they must show up in November.
“We need to make real the threat that Democrats have a good shot of winning control of Congress,” the RNC’s report stated.
“While a significant part of that lack of intensity is undoubtedly due to these voters’ sentiments toward the President, it may also be partly because they don’t believe there is anything at stake in this election,” the study reported.
The authors pointed out that the media got the 2016 election wrong.
They concluded that Republican voters used that to dismiss warnings that the Democrats were set to win in 2018.
More 2018 Polls Show Bad News For The GOP
In addition, the GOP also got bad news in two Senate races.
CNN polled the contests in Arizona and Tennessee.
Both seats were held by anti-Trump Republicans that retired.
Democrats need to win at least one of these races to have a shot at taking over the Senate.
In Arizona, Congresswoman Krysten Sinema leads Representative Martha McSally 50 to 43 percent.
CNN’s poll found former Governor Phil Bredesen led Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn 50 to 45 percent.
Democrats also have a strong chance to defeat anti-Trump Republican Dean Heller in Nevada.
But Republicans stand a good chance of picking up the North Dakota Senate seat.
That makes Tennessee the make or break state in 2018.
If Republicans hold on to that seat, Democrats have no chance to win back the majority.
However, Bredesen is a popular former Governor.
A recent poll showed he had a 69 percent favorable rating.
The Danger For Trump
The Senate map favors Republicans.
Ten Democrats are running in states Trump won in 2016.
But Democrats hold an enthusiasm edge.
Their voters are more likely to show up and vote.
The Senate is in play.
If Democrats win the Senate, they will impeach the President.
They will also hold any Supreme Court seats open through the 2020 election.
