Trump-hating Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is looking for a new line of work.
Where Markle landed created a pop culture earthquake.
And now Meghan Markle made one life-changing decision that no one saw coming.
Markle and her husband Prince Harry announced a new deal with Netflix where, Deadline reports, “the pair have two non-fiction projects in production at the streamer. They form part of the overall deal that her and husband, Harry, The Duke of Sussex, signed with the company in 2020 via their Archewell Productions banner.”
The first series will feature Markle as an Oprah-like figure that covers her as a lifestyle brand.
“The first series will see The Duchess, otherwise known as Meghan Markle, celebrate the joys of cooking, gardening, entertaining, and friendship,” the Deadline report continued.
The second series is a spin-off on Netflix’s super popular “F1: Drive to Survive” docuseries.
Formula One racing was a niche sport for the European elite until “Drive to Survive” put a spotlight on the personalities of the drivers and team owners and turned F1 into a mainstream sport in the United States.
Netflix hopes to use that template for a docuseries about polo featuring Markle and Prince Harry.
“The second series follows the world of professional polo. Shot primarily at the U.S. Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida, at The USPA National Polo Center, the series will explore the world of the sport, which is known primarily for its aesthetic and social scene. It will pull the curtain back on the grit and passion of the sport, capturing players and all it takes to compete at the highest level. Prince Harry has been known as a keen polo player and is often photographed playing internationally,” Deadline reported.
Netflix previously struck gold with Markle when the series “Suits” – which ran for nine seasons on the USA Network – debuted on Netflix and became one of the most binge-watched shows on the platform.
But going into the Harry and Meghan Markle business is risky.
Spotify found that out when it ended a $20 million deal for the two to produce a podcast.
The pair only created 12 episodes over a three-year period and there were rumors that Markle didn’t even interview the guests and her editing staff inserted her questions during the post-production process.
Spotify head of podcast innovation Bill Simmons called the two “grifters” and blasted Harry as being a no-talent hack.
“‘The F—ing Grifters.’ That’s the podcast we shoulda launched with them,” Simmons ranted during an episode of his podcast. “I gotta get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It’s one of my best stories.”
“Shoot this guy to the sun… I’m so tired of this guy. What does he bring to the table? He just whines about s— and keeps giving interviews. Who gives a s—? Who cares about your life? You weren’t even the favorite son,” Simmons concluded.
