Utah Senator Mitt Romney’s scheme to bring down Donald Trump did not end with his impeachment betrayal.
Many Washington insiders believed the Godfather of the Never Trump movement was merely bidding his time for Romney’s next attack on the President.
But now Mitt Romney let the cat out of the bag on his secret plan for 2020.
Romney recently attended the Munich Security Conference where Romney took part in a panel discussion where he offered his thoughts on the 2020 election.
The two-time failed Presidential candidate offered his opinion on Donald Trump’s re-election prospects and predicted Donald Trump’s victory.
Romney claimed Trump would emerge victorious because the Democrat Party seemed poised to nominate socialist Senator Bernie Sanders to take on the President.
“I can tell you I think it’s likely he will get reelected, not because he’s highly popular, but because I think the Democrats are not going to nominate someone who’ll be a very effective competitor,” Romney chirped.
This is not the first time Romney downplayed Sanders’ chances of victory.
In an interview explaining his impeachment vote, Romney told McKay Coppins of The Atlantic that he could not vote for Sanders or Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.
Coppins wrote, “Though he said he won’t make an endorsement in this year’s presidential election, Romney was clear that he will not cast a ballot for Trump. But, he said, ‘under no circumstances would I vote for Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren to become president of the United States.’ In 2016, he wrote in his wife’s name, and he told me, ‘She’ll probably get [a] second vote.’”
Once again, Mitt Romney wanted to have it both ways.
Romney craved the adulation of the liberal “journalists” in the fake news media and hoped they would craft a narrative that Romney was the last true statesman that voted his conscience by becoming the first Senator in American history to support removing a President of his own party from office.
But at the same time, Romney hoped to cling to a future in Republican politics by not committing to voting for the Democrat nominee for President.
This contradiction exposed Romney as a transparent fraud.
If Donald Trump is so dangerous that Romney believed he was the first President whose conduct ever required the Senate sentencing him to the political equivalent of the death penalty, then Romney should happily campaign across the country for the Democrat candidate.
If Romney thinks President Trump will win re-election then he had no business voting to convict Donald Trump on the Democrats’ phony abuse of power article of impeachment.
Of course, fake news reporters would never ask real questions of Romney.
Right now he is the “toast of the town” in the Washington swamp.
But Republican voters no longer trust Romney and now judge every move he makes and every sentence he utters against Romney’s confessed desire to throw Donald Trump overboard.
