Democrats are coming to terms with their Kamala Harris problem.
The major question was if anyone in party leadership was willing to take any action.
And Kamala Harris got blindsided by one massive public betrayal that is the final nail in the coffin.
Nancy Pelosi got the ball rolling on the plan to marginalize Harris and sending the signal it’s time for her to go when Pelosi refused to endorse Harris remaining as Joe Biden’s running mate during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
One of Pelosi’s most trusted allies is Maryland Democrat Congressman Jamie Raskin.
Pelosi handpicked Raskin to serve as a House impeachment manager and to sit on the January 6 Select Committee.
Raskin followed Pelosi’s lead on refusing to offer a public show of support for Harris running again as vice president.
CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Raskin the simple question of if Raskin would endorse Harris staying on as Biden’s running mate.
Raskin declined and instead offered an overall endorsement of Joe Biden’s record in office.
“Well, obviously, she gave the right answer, that’s President Biden’s choice, and I think she’s an excellent running mate for President Biden. You know, I don’t know what more needs to be said about that. Obviously, people are still trying to throw presidential politics into turmoil, but President Biden and Vice President Harris are running on an excellent record: $1.2 trillion investment in the Infrastructure Act, record investment in climate action. We’ve reduced prescription drug prices, and so he has a very strong policy record to run on there. I want to resist dependency to try to trivialize all politics because of personalities,” Raskin responded.
Tapper followed up saying he wasn’t asking Raskin to comment on personalities, but merely if Raskin would endorse the sitting vice president running on the ticket for re-election.
“I don’t know what else I could say,” Raskin answered.
Tapper shot back that the answer is simple.
“You could say yes,” Tapper responded.
Once again, Raskin could not bring himself to say he endorsed Kamala Harris running again for vice president.
“I don’t know whether President Biden has named his running mate. We’re going to a convention next summer. You know, it’s a year away from now, and we’re going to go through that process,” Raskin stated.
Tapper asked a third time.
“I mean, you could say yes. You could say, ‘Yes, I think Kamala Harris is the best vice president and the best running mate for President Biden.’ That’s the answer you could be giving right now. Yes, she is,” Tapper exclaimed.
And again, Raskin stammered his way through an answer where he did everything but offer Kamala Harris his support in 2024.
“So I’ve not seen any public opinion polling. You know, as you might be a stronger vice presidential running mate than her or me or anybody else. I don’t know who else if you’re talking about the polling, but I would tell you, as a matter of substance in public policy, she’d be an excellent choice. She and the president have done an excellent job,” Raskin replied.
The anxiety over Harris has to do with one thing and one thing only – polls.
A recent Fox News poll showed Donald Trump leading Joe Biden.
CNN’s poll also found Trump leading Biden.
Democrats have no use for Joe Biden if they don’t think he can beat Trump.
But Democrats can’t jettison Biden as Real Clear Politics showed Trump leading Harris by four points.
If Biden steps down, then Harris will be the candidate as no Democrat will want to run a bloody primary to wrest the nomination from the first black, female vice president and tear the party to pieces in the process.
Top-level Democrats like Raskin and Pelosi are hoping their very conspicuous refusal to endorse Harris will signal to other Democrats that if Biden declines to seek re-election the party won’t automatically line up behind Harris and will consider alternatives.
